Flag of Switzerland

The iconic Swiss Flag has a controversial history as many lineages claim to father its history.  But the white cross on red dates back 1291.  Ironically for a country known for peace and neutrality, this flag was made the official Army flag in 1840.  That design remains today.  It is the only square flag of a sovereign nation.
